About

Hilary

Hilary is a Body Control Pilates teacher who has been teaching Matwork since 2012. In this time she has gained qualifications to specialise in pre and postnatal Pilates, Pilates for Bone health, Pilates for golfers, High Intensity Power Pilates  and her Reformer training with Lisa Bradshaw.

Hilary has loved teaching in person for 1:1's, in studios and halls for matwork and in beautiful specially equipped reformer studios.

Hilary grew up in Angus, Scotland. At 16 she trained at The Dance School of Scotland in Glasgow before moving to London to continue her studies in musical theatre at The Doreen Bird College of Performing Arts.

As a performer Hilary toured all over the world, which led to her discovery of Pilates in Miami in 2000. After a serious back injury, which left her unable to walk for a year, it was the physiotherapists for The Miami City Ballet who encouraged her back on to her feet using the fantastic exercises on the Pilates Reformer. The training they gave was so thorough that within a year Hilary was back dancing again and touring with West End musicals.

The Pilates Matwork  exercises always remained part of her regime throughout her continued career.
After settling down in Hertfordshire Hilary decided to take advantage of all her past experiences and trained as a Body Control Pilates teacher in early 2012 whilst pregnant with her first child.

Hilary's map has led her home to Scotland and she now takes great pleasure from teaching Matwork and reformer classes to all abilities and ages.

Why the Pilates MAP?

What a beautiful thing it is to be able to stand strong and tall and say ...

"I fell apart and survived"

Have you ever felt lost? Has life thrown you in an unexpected direction?

I have.

For the last few years actually this has been my underlying emotion. Lost. I was desperate for instructions as to how to cope – a map to advise me on how to handle all sorts of unknown situations. Not necessarily physically but absolutely emotionally.

I worry insanely as to whether I’m doing “it” (regardless of what “it” is) right in this state of unmapped blindness.  But there comes a time when I have to remind myself that I’m doing the very best I can… and that is enough.

“Physical fitness is the first requisite to happiness” – Joseph Pilates

My MAP has always been Pilates. It is my absolute constant and I check in on my mat every day.  It has helped me navigate through peak physical fitness, major injury, performing in wonderful shows, travel, love, IVF treatment, pregnancy, birth, postnatal care, loss, heart break, divorce, a global pandemic and single parenthood.

Pilates has always  “had my back” …literally.

It is my strength when times are at their very worst and it is my joy through even the smallest of triumphs.

Pilates will guide us through all of life’s crazy twists and turns with Movement Alignment and Precision and lead us to a stronger healthier happy.
